Musico Militar in Cameroon

Musico militar refers to the musical representation of military life. It is an interesting area of inquiry, especially when analyzing the relationship between music and social order. It has been argued that military music can have a subversive effect, by questioning authority and rebelling against established orders, thus making it an important aspect of resistance against oppressive regimes. This paper aims to analyse the influence of musico militar in the context of Cameroon’s history and culture, as well as its use in social and political movements.

Military bands and their music are a part of the cultural heritage of the army, the police, and other security forces in most countries, as well as of their citizens. They have a strong influence in the development of a country and its identity. They are often used in parades, celebrations, and other official events, but also as a tool of propaganda and for instilling national pride and patriotism.

In this context, we analyze the role of the Musico militar military band as a mediator between the state and its citizens and how it plays an important role in the shaping of identities. This is done by examining the way military bands, their musicians and their musical performances, and their songs and melodies shape the identity of the armed forces in different times and places.

The Cameroonian Armed Forces have a tradition of military music that was initiated in 1959, a year before the country gained its independence. Since then, the army has established a number of bands that follow Western military conventions. This is especially true for the Yaounde based “Music Band Company of the Cameroonian Armed Forces”, which was originally established as a brass band company in 1959 and then transformed into a full musical section 10 years later.

The main purpose of our study was to examine the role that the military band plays in the context of EB, identifying their estrategias de acomodacao, resistencia e singularizacao (invençao de vida subjetiva) as strategies for lidar com as experiencias institucionais. We did this by analyzing their ways of representing themselves sociais, i.e., the way they represent themselves to themselves and others in their everyday lives.

This is why a militar band can be considered a model for constructing individual identities in a politicada. As a result, it can contribute to a better understanding of the complexities of EB.
