A Course in Miracles

A Course in Miracles is a spiritual teaching that emphasizes forgiveness as the way to healing and freedom. It teaches that the real world, which reflects truth, is one of unity, love and sinlessness. The Course also teaches that the mind can choose to remember its true function, which is to be God’s messenger of love.

The Course began with two Columbia University psychologists who were upset by the anger and division they saw in their workplace. They decided to seek a solution and in 1965 began a seven year process of inner dictation, which ultimately produced the Course, which is presented as being “dictated by Jesus.” No author’s name appears on the book.

Although the Course uses Acim Christian terminology, it is ecumenical in nature and states that it does not teach any specific religion. It is a self-study spiritual thought system consisting of three books: The Text, which sets forth the concepts that form its curriculum; the Workbook for Students, which contains 365 daily lessons that emphasize experience over belief in a theology; and the Manual for Teachers, which provides answers to questions about the Course.

Is happiness the goal of the Course? That depends on how you define happiness. If happiness is a feeling of pleasure and contentment based on getting what you want, when you want it, from whomever you can get it from, then no. But if happiness means that you’ve rediscovered the peace and joy that come from knowing who you really are, then yes.
